What expansion joint filler boards do
Concrete elements move as temperature, drying shrinkage, settlement and loading conditions change. Expansion and isolation joints create planned separation so adjoining elements can move without transferring unintended stress. Preformed expansion joint filler boards occupy the designed joint space during construction and remain as a compressible separation layer within the joint detail.
WAXboard is Nordic Fibreboard’s wood-fibre-based, paraffin-impregnated joint filler board for suitable concrete and civil-engineering applications. These expansion joint filler boards can be considered for project types including roads, bridges, pavements, industrial floors, concrete elements, commercial developments and residential construction. The final application must be checked against the current product data and the project specification; the list of typical uses is not a universal approval.
The filler board is one part of the joint
An expansion joint normally includes more than the filler. Depending on the design, the completed detail may require a sealant reservoir, bond breaker or backer material, primer, arris protection, waterstop or other components. The filler board establishes and maintains the joint space, but it should not be described as the exposed traffic surface or the joint’s primary watertight seal unless the documented system explicitly gives it that role.
The responsible engineer determines the joint location, width, depth and movement capacity. The filler should be securely positioned before concrete placement so it does not float, shift or become bridged by concrete. At intersections and penetrations, continuous separation and correct sealant geometry are critical to joint performance.
Why consider a wood fibre joint filler?
Wood fibre provides a low-density, workable base that can be cut into boards or strips for project requirements. Wood fibre expansion joint filler boards offer an alternative material route for buyers evaluating conventional foam or bitumen-impregnated filler products. Comparisons must be made property by property and test method by test method; different materials or market tiers are not automatically equivalent.
For contractors, easy cutting and handling can simplify positioning expansion joint filler boards around concrete details. For distributors, the product addresses a specialist B2B category with recurring demand in construction and infrastructure. For designers and procurement teams, the important questions are documented compression and recovery behaviour, water-related performance, thickness tolerance, durability, format, applicable standards and compatibility with the complete joint system.
Information to include with an enquiry
To assess a WAXboard requirement, provide the project country, intended use, applicable specification or test standard, board or strip dimensions, thicknesses, quantity, delivery programme and any required approvals. If a competitor grade is named, include the current technical data sheet rather than asking for general “equivalence”. Nordic Fibreboard can then compare the stated requirements with available product documentation and production feasibility.
Do not publish or promise a thickness, colour, water-absorption level, compressive value, certification, minimum quantity or delivery term unless it has been reconfirmed for the specific enquiry.
