Floor Insulation Boards
Natural woodfibre floor insulation boards offer a strong yet lightweight solution for flooring, reducing the overall weight of structures. They provide good impact resistance, making them suitable for high-traffic areas while maintaining durability.
Our products
Nordic Fibreboard’s floor insulation boards are rigid wood-fibre softboards for suitable underlay, acoustic and additional insulation layers. Depending on the product and floor system, they can help reduce impact sound, improve thermal comfort and even out minor surface irregularities. They do not replace a load-bearing subfloor, so selection must account for loads, moisture, floor finish and the complete build-up.
Category description
Start with the floor type and required function
The phrase floor insulation boards covers several different jobs. A suspended timber floor may need insulation between or across joists. A floating floor may need an acoustic underlay beneath the finish. A renovation project may need a thin layer to reduce footstep noise and smooth small irregularities. A floor above an unheated space may prioritise thermal resistance and airtight continuity.
Nordic Fibreboard’s relevant wood-fibre range includes ISOmodul, ISOplaat and ISOplaat ECO+ products for suitable floor and underlay applications. The correct choice depends on the exact role of the layer, available height, board thickness, compression behaviour, point loads and compatibility with the finished floor. Use the product page and current technical information rather than assuming that every product shown in the wider category is interchangeable.
Acoustic comfort without the "soundproof" shortcut
The porous structure of wood fibre can absorb and dissipate sound energy. In floors, a resilient fibreboard layer may help reduce impact noise from footsteps and movement, while additional mass, separation and airtightness elsewhere in the assembly influence airborne sound. Results depend on the complete floor-ceiling build-up, including joists or slab, subfloor, resilient layer, finish, ceiling and junction details.
For this reason, describe Nordic Fibreboard’s floor insulation boards as contributing to impact-sound or acoustic comfort where appropriate, not as making a floor soundproof. Projects with a defined dB target should use a tested or calculated assembly and follow the specified installation method.
Thermal comfort and surface preparation
A wood-fibre layer can add thermal resistance and make an interior floor surface feel more comfortable. Thin boards may also accommodate minor surface irregularities, but they are not a remedy for an unstable, wet or substantially uneven base. The substrate must be dry, sound, level within the floor-finish tolerance and capable of carrying the design loads.
Floor insulation boards must be protected from unsuitable moisture conditions. Check the need for a damp-proof or vapour-control layer, especially over concrete, ground-contact or unheated spaces. Preserve required ventilation below suspended timber floors and resolve leaks or timber decay before installation.
Check loads, finishes and system compatibility
Before choosing a board, identify the floor finish and its manufacturer’s requirements. Floating laminate or engineered-wood flooring, dry screed systems and other finishes can impose different limits for underlay thickness, compressibility, thermal resistance and underfloor-heating performance. Heavy point loads, wheeled traffic and fixed cabinetry also affect the decision.
Nordic Fibreboard’s softboard is not a load-bearing structural deck. Keep structural subfloors, load distribution and fasteners within the approved floor design. If underfloor heating is present, confirm that the total thermal resistance and material sequence suit the heating-system and flooring suppliers’ instructions.
Use this category page to identify a likely product, then review the exact technical data, dimensions and installation guidance. For large projects, defined acoustic targets or non-standard floors, discuss the build-up with the responsible designer and Nordic Fibreboard before ordering.
