Roof Insulation Boards

Roof insulation boards can provide a rigid wood-fibre layer for thermal, acoustic or wind-protection functions in suitable roof build-ups. Product choice depends on the board’s intended use, its position in the roof and the required performance.

Category description

Roof insulation boards must be selected as part of a roof system

Roofs experience wind, precipitation, solar heat, temperature changes and moisture from both inside and outside. For that reason, roof insulation boards cannot be selected on thermal performance alone. The board’s intended function, exposure conditions, vapour behaviour, fixing and interface with every adjacent layer need to be understood before it becomes part of a specification.

Nordic Fibreboard’s range includes wood-fibre softboards that may be used in documented roof applications. Wind Barrier Board – ISOplaat and ProWind – ISOplaat are relevant where the construction needs a wind-protection layer that helps limit unwanted air movement through insulation. ISOplaat and ISOmodul insulation boards can be considered for suitable thermal or acoustic layers, subject to the exact roof design and product documentation.

These roles are different. A wind barrier helps the insulation perform as intended by reducing air movement, but it is not automatically the roof’s primary waterproofing or airtightness layer. An insulation board adds thermal resistance, but it is not a structural deck and should not be walked on over unsupported spans. The roof covering, underlay or weather-resistive layer, air and vapour control, ventilation spaces and load-bearing structure must each be designed and installed for their own function.

Comfort in winter and summer

Wood fibre provides thermal resistance and can store heat. In a correctly designed roof, this combination can contribute to winter energy performance and help moderate short-term summer heat flow. The outcome depends on the complete U-value, thermal bridges, airtightness, insulation continuity, orientation, ventilation and local climate. A general material statement cannot replace a project-specific calculation.

The porous fibre structure can also support acoustic comfort by absorbing sound energy. This may be useful beneath roof coverings affected by rain or in loft and room-in-roof applications, but any airborne or impact-sound claim should be based on a tested or calculated assembly rather than the board alone.

Roof renovation requires an existing-condition check

In renovation, identify leaks, damaged timber, trapped moisture, existing membranes and ventilation paths before adding roof insulation boards. The new build-up must be able to manage construction moisture and future vapour flow. Interfaces at eaves, ridges, penetrations, valleys and roof windows need the same attention as the main roof area.

For new construction, coordinate board dimensions and edge details with rafter spacing, support, fasteners and sequencing. Do not leave a board exposed to weather for a presumed period; use only the temporary-exposure duration and joint treatment declared for the exact product, if one is declared.

From category page to specification

Use this category to identify the relevant Nordic Fibreboard products, then open the product page and current documents. Confirm thickness, declared thermal conductivity, vapour resistance, reaction to fire, mechanical characteristics, dimensions, edge profile, exposure and fixing rules. Where a roof is safety-critical or falls under a local approval system, obtain project-specific guidance from the responsible designer.
